WEEKLY UPDATE BROADCAST 1/23/12

Good evening! This is Valerie Shelters, principal at Northwest Elementary School, calling with this week’s POWER update.

Last Friday we had our reward assembly for all students who had not received any behavior points through December. It was great to have over 85% of our students attend the assembly and enjoy the demonstrations of Tung Soo Do, a form of martial arts. Although the students saw great demonstrations of ability, the message was that self-discipline can help you achieve goals in life, including making good behavior choices! Our next reward assembly will take place after Spring Break for students who have not earned any behavior points January through March. It would be great to have even more students join us for that assembly!!

I want to remind you about the Northwest Movie Night taking place this coming Tuesday night at the historic Michigan Theater! “Mr. Popper's Penguins”, a PG movie, will be shown. The movie will start at 6 PM with doors opening at 5:00 - they're even offering tours of the theater! The movie is a steal at $3 and concessions will be sold. Tickets are available for purchase in our office.

Next Monday night, January 30, the PTO is meeting at 6:00 PM in the Northwest Elementary Library. This is a great time to network with other parents, and work together to support our schools!!

Also, please mark your calendars for another great upcoming opportunity! On February 15, 7:00-8:30 PM at the Potter Center, Kevin Honeycutt, educator and technology expert, will be presenting information regarding cyber-bullying. He will be featured in assemblies at each school that same day, so you can have a great family discussion about the wonderful opportunities technology provides, as well as the dangers of cyber-bullying. More information about this FREE event can be found on our district web-site.

Thanks again for your attention to all of these items! By the way, just a reminder that every Friday is Credit Union Day at Northwest Elementary…does your child have an account? It’s a great way to start the valuable habit of saving. Have an awesome week…we’re looking forward to putting P.O.W.E.R. in action at Northwest Elementary!!!
